Why the Magic Wineglass? Because over the years, a notable portion of my travel photos feature a wineglass... which I maintain has magically appeared. (And it often does! When you are a regular at a place, and they know you enjoy a particular wine, they tend to produce it upon arrival. Or maybe it's a glass of icy cold bubbly -a welcome gift from the owner.) For whatever reason, I have an inordinate number of these pictures. I started tagging them #magicwineglass many years ago, so when I started casting about for a name for my tour company, it was pointed out that I already have one. Voila.

I've been touring around the Mediterranean and mainly Italy with girlfriends for more than a decade. It typically fell to me to research and plan - things I thoroughly enjoy - and it developed into a labor of love, avocation to vocation.

Life is painted on an ever-changing canvas. One year was colored with a sweeping new landscape. I closed my B&B of 25 years, gradually moving from bed and breakfast to vacation rentals, and now the houses are all occupied by long-term tenants, including me. It’s certainly a far cry from the steady stream of overnight guests and brides and staff, breakfast service and wedding ceremonies, omelets and cakes and bouquets. My job title was Fairygodmother. I've been planning and executing people's dream vacations for a very long time.

What a marvelous life! Over and over, I told people I had the best job in the world, and it’s so true. Eventually, though, came time for twilight and ease and a different pace. A time for dinner at the table, and holding hands while watching TV, big dog squished between us on the sofa. A time for planting lilies and waiting for spring, with February and November trips to Italy. A time for book club and coffee with girlfriends and farmer’s markets and trivia night. All that time making people’s dreams come true melted into time for my own dreams... And then I got restless, because one of my dreams has always been, always will be, fulfilling other people's dreams. Once a fairygodmother, always a fairygodmother. My magic wand came out of storage and this travel company was born.

And I'm still alert to those moments when everything clicks.
